The decision of the Bavarian State Government to include the „Memminger Fisherman’s Day“ in the Bavarian State Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage has sparked strong criticism from the animal rights organization PETA. According to PETA, this event, which involves the killing of hundreds of trout in the city stream, clearly violates animal welfare laws.
PETA has labeled the inclusion of the „Memminger Fisherman’s Day“ in the state inventory as unacceptable, as such fishing competitions are, in their view, not compatible with the inventory inclusion criteria. The organization has filed multiple complaints against the organizers of the „event.“
„Animal cruelty and culture are incompatible,“ said Dr. Tanja Breining, a marine biologist and specialist in fish and marine animals at PETA. She emphasizes that every organism has the right to a life of freedom and integrity, regardless of whether it is a land animal or a sea creature.
PETA’s criticism is based on several arguments. Firstly, the „Memminger Fisherman’s Day“ violates the state goal of animal welfare enshrined in the Basic Law, as its content and purpose involve the killing of animals. Furthermore, the event is not considered „open, inclusive, and participatory tradition preservation,“ as certain groups are excluded from participation.
PETA also points out that all prize and fishing competitions constitute a violation of animal welfare laws. The killing of animals without justifiable reason, as occurs in such events, is prohibited under § 17 No. 1 of the Animal Welfare Act.
Fish as sentient beings deserve our protection, PETA emphasizes. They have complex social structures and are capable of experiencing pain. Therefore, the organization demands that animals be recognized as individuals under the law and be granted certain basic rights.
The inclusion of the „Memminger Fisherman’s Day“ in the Bavarian State Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage is seen by PETA as sending the wrong message and should be reconsidered.
