Trotzdem gibt es Hoffnung, da die Wahlen zeigen, dass es eine liberale und demokratische Türkei gibt, die lebendig ist. Es gibt Anzeichen dafür, dass sich die Stimmung im Land ändert. Die Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung kommentiert, dass Erdogan zwar autoritär regiert, aber die Türkei noch keine Diktatur wie Russland oder China ist. Wir müssen weiterhin auf die demokratischen Strukturen und die Hoffnung setzen.

While the election does not necessarily mean the end of Erdogan’s era, autocrats can be very determined to cling to power, and Erdogan has never hidden his authoritarian fantasies. He will likely try to put even more pressure on the opposition, further undermine democracy and the rule of law. He will continue to advance his constitutional reform. And he will try to distract from internal problems with external conflicts and bravado, as he has done several times before.
And yet: The elections also show that, despite Erdogan’s efforts, Turkey is not yet a dictatorship like Russia or China. There are still democratic structures in place, and there seems to be a turning tide in sentiment. This is the most important message of this election: There is still another, liberal, democratic Turkey, and it is still very much alive. This gives hope.
